What if the next frontier in AI isn’t technical, but ethical?
You might be reading the OpenAI versus Musk dispute as a legal drama or a clash of personalities. That is understandable. But what if that framing is a distraction?
What if this moment is better understood as a real-time morality test?
A tension between mission, money, and meaning. And a revealing example of how power is justified through language.
This situation highlights something deeper than AI capability. It exposes the moral frameworks leaders use, consciously or not, when making decisions that affect millions.
A mentor of mine, Trevor Hilder, developed a framework called Moral Modalities. It helps surface the hidden modes that sit beneath our choices and behaviours:
- Learning, where growth and mentorship come first
- Exchange, where contracts, incentives, and fairness dominate
- Conditioned hierarchy, where control is maintained through force or threat
- Stewardship, where the focus is on protecting the future
- Unconditional care, where the vulnerable are prioritised
The current turbulence reflects what Trevor described as a monstrous moral hybrid. This happens when leaders begin by acting like stewards, but behave like traders. When institutions speak the language of mission, yet operate through dominance or extraction.
The risk is not conflict itself.
The risk is moral dissonance that becomes normalised.
When organisations stop noticing the gap between what they say they stand for and how they actually exercise power, trust erodes quietly. Ethics becomes performative. Governance becomes reactive.
This moment is not just about AI.
It is about maturity.
It is about learning to see institutions not as personality-driven dramas, but as systems of belief that shape decisions, incentives, and long-term impact.
